National Environmental Farm Plan
Toward a National Standard - Canada’s Environmental Sustainability Program
The national harmonization effort builds on the provincial and territorial EFP’s credibility within the agriculture community, in-turn attracting major buyers who have implemented it as the environmental component in sector-specific sustainability programs.
However, a challenge still exists for buyers who are sourcing products from multiple Canadian regions. EFP delivery agents across the country saw the program’s momentum as an opportunity to address this gap by building a national, consistent standard that meets the needs of producers who farm and ranch in a wide variety of agricultural climates, while ensuring consistency for buyers, regardless of where in Canada they source their products.
The national standard, currently known as the National EFP (NEFP), is not be a replacement program, but rather a harmonization effort across the existing EFP programs nation wide.
This builds on one of the EFP’s greatest strengths in that through provincial and territorial delivery, it can respond to the variety of regional agricultural and environmental realities inherent to our vast country.
